Sciatic Pain or Sciatica:

Sciatic nerve pain usually affects the back, buttock and leg on one side of the body, and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as tingling and burning sensation.

Usually, sciatic nerve pain is caused by compression and inflammation of the sciatic nerve due to changes in the spine. However, in more severe cases, sciatic pain can also be indicative of a herniated disc or excessive contraction of the glutes and even tumors.

People who do a lot of exercise to strengthen the glutes can get sciatica due to increased muscle tone. Also, due to the contraction of the buttocks, more specifically the piriformis muscle, the nerve can also be compressed causing symptoms – Piriformis Syndrome.

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body, which is formed by joining the smaller nerves coming out of the end of the spine. This nerve has a path that runs through the buttocks and back of the thigh to the knee, where it splits to form two other nerves that run through the legs to the feet.
